It looks like some sort of futuristic ray gun — and it was inspired by space age technology. But in fact the so-called Halo System is a revolutionary cosmetic enhancement tool that utilises plasma (the "fourth state of matter", after solids, liquids and gases) to remove fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Halo was developed by a group of scientists based at Surrey University's Space Centre, led by Dr Thomas Frame, who realised that the techniques for using plasma to propel and control satellites in space could be adapted for medical purposes. The input of medical professionals and the expertise of incubation hub SETsquared Surrey subsequently allowed them to put their ideas on a commercial footing in the form of startup Fourth State.

One key technology 4SM are investigating is plasma technology. Capable of producing chemicals including nitric oxide and other radicals that can sterilise and deactivate bacteria and heal wounds, the temperature and surface energy delivery of plasma technologies can also be controlled in order to reduce epidermal and superficial dermal thickness.

The team recently created a hand-held plasma device, which can remove the upper layer of dermis and sterilise skin treatment areas. Application of the technology includes wrinkle removal and fine line reductions, treatment of diabetic ulcers and open wounds as well as trauma-related operations like managing acute bleeding.

Dr Tom Frame, founder and CEO of 4SM said, "We have had significant results across a range of histopathology studies and microbiology evaluation, which demonstrates a high level of efficacy across our commercial applications."

"Want to do exciting entrepreneurial research? – ask the space scientists"

Advances in medical technology have improved the quality of life for people around the globe and contributed towards a general increase in life expectancy. Much of this can be attributed to a synthesis between the experience of medical professionals and the creativity and ability that biotechnology researchers have in creating precision instrumentation and equipment and to invent or improve techniques..

Fourth State Medicine Ltd. wins the investment pitch slot at the HRH Duke of York supported event #pitchatpalace

20 October 2014

Three SETsquared companies are in with a chance of pitching to HRH Duke of York in a start-up event with a royal twist.

Nu Desine (Bristol), Fourth State Medicine (Surrey) and Smart Antenna Technologies (Bath) have been shortlisted to take part in Pitch@Palace, a project spearheaded by the Duke of York that will culminate in 14 of the UK’s brightest science and technology start ups pitching for investment live in front of hundreds of the biggest names in business at St James’ Palace on November 5.

All three were selected to take part in the first phase of Pitch@Palace, which saw them get investor readiness training, one-to-one business support and pitching advice. They then went through a judging process at a ‘bootcamp’ at Microsoft’s offices yesterday (October 20), after which one lucky company will be selected to pitch their business ideas at the Palace to a room of international investment firms, celebrities and high net worth individuals. The other two members will win an exhibition slot at the event and get the chance to network with guests.

The bootcamp saw a total of 42 businesses pitching their ideas to the panel, and were assessed on three criteria: best pitch, commercial impact and most disruptive idea.
